Lindisfarne Scriptorium - Treasures for the Journey
Customer Type: Retail

Created: 2022

Words:

Protect me as I travel through today
God of all, circle me
Grant me the blessings of your mercy
God of all, circle me
Refresh my spirit and soften my heart.

Background:

A circling prayer is the Celtic tradition of the ‘Caim’ or encircling, a prayer which combines words and actions (an arm raised with hand outstretched and the body turning in a circle to ‘draw’ a circle around the body) to ask God to entirely surround and protect the supplicant.

As supplicants or prayer-makers we are not passively asking a distant entity to answer our requests, we are, with the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, actively campaigning for God’s will to be done in our lives and the lives of others.

In the simple action of making a circle around ourselves and our lips forming the prayers of our heart with the conscious involvement of our mind we are deliberately combining the agreement of body, mind and spirit with the awesome power of our creator God, trusting that the same God will answer our petition. That trust is not a passive, fragile state but an act of joyful passion. It is fervent anticipation and expectation of God’s active participation in our life.
