In Dulci Jubilo
In dulci jubilo,
Nun singet und seid froh!
Unsers Herzens Wonne
Leit in praesepio;
Und leuchtet wie die Sonne
Matris in gremio.
Alpha es et O!
Literal translation

In sweet rejoicing,
now sing and be glad!
Our hearts’ joy
lies in the manger;
And it shines like the sun
in the mother’s lap.
You are the alpha and omega!
Robert Pearsall Carol

In dulci jubilo [In quiet joy]
Let us our homage show
Our heart’s joy reclineth
In praesepio [in a manger]
And like a bright star shineth
Matris in gremio! [in the mother’s lap]
Alpha es et O! [Thou art Alpha & Omega]

Background:

The tune we are all familiar with was probably a traditional European folk tune and was written down first in the 15th century. To me it epitomises the joy of Christmas, the tune and rhythm take us on a cheerful celebratory dance and make us think of happy times. The notes shown are from the melody as published in the 1582 Finnish music collection ‘Piae Cantiones’.
The original words were written in a mix of Latin and German and the literal translation into English shares with us a simple, wonderful message - Rejoice! Sing! The Messiah, the Light of the World, the Beginning and the End of all, is born!
