Background:

'People of the Lion' was inspired by the song 'Soldiers of the Lion' by Chuck Gerard. It's a song I have known for years and always found encouraging and joyful. Rather than emphasise the battle in this piece I wanted to highlight the joyful victory of the Christian life. Our lives are coloured by that victory as we reflect God's glory into the world. Many of the figures are in postures of dance because of all the expressions of worship, dance is perhaps the most powerful. It requires complete vulnerability to move without being self-conscious and complete openness to Gods direction if it is to encourage others.

The lion banner is symbolic of Gods protection and leadership.

I have always been inspired by the stories of C.S. Lewis and the allegorical character of Aslan the Lion in particular, the gentle but not tame lion is a worthy symbol of Jesus. I wanted to make the banner in this piece large enough to encompass all of the people under it. The clothing and people are drawn simply to highlight the grandeur of the Lion and the colours of his mane are showing on the people he covers.
